It can be very daunting for a woman to live alone in this day and age of increasing violence and crime. And yet it can also be a very freeing and powerful experience. A lot of how a woman accepts living alone deals with her attitude and sense of well-being. A woman who lives in fear and low self-esteem may find it difficult to face an empty home. Putting into action some protection ideas may help to build confidence and a sense of power over your own safety.
The first idea for protection that comes to mind is a dog. This really is the best deterrent in keeping someone from breaking into a home, as long as the dog is in the home and barks at intruders. No one likes the idea of being bitten by a dog, no matter how large or small it is. A dog bite can have serious consequences and an intruder will not want to deal with a dog interrupting his home invasion.

3. A motion sensor, easy to install and battery operated to either sound an alarm or an entry chime.
4. A voice alert system, able to monitor several sensors at a time using one receiver/speaker base unit. You can program each sensor to alert you with your own pre-recorded voice message. This can be used to alert you when someone comes up the driveway, is in your yard, at your door, by your pool, or wherever else you may need to monitor.
There are several other products for protecting your home, of which you can find by doing a little research online or at your local hardware or home store. There really is no need for a woman living alone to feel that she cannot be safe without another person there with her.
Some ideas for personal protection are also available:
1. Pepper sprays are small, compact, easy to carry, and yet very effective in stopping an assailant or intruder into your personal space or home. They are affordable enough to have 2 or more - in your home, car and purse or pocket. Pepper spray will incapacitate anyone if sprayed in the eyes, nose and mouth, causing eyes to clamp shut and breathing to become very difficult for about 30 minutes.
2. Stun guns are also very affordable and come in many sizes and shapes, as well as voltages. They can be worn in a holster or hidden in a desk drawer. They also come in a baton form, extending far enough away from you that the assailant doesn't have to be right on top of you to get zapped and incapacitated. 3. Personal alarms are effective in drawing attention to your situation and scaring a perpetrator away. Someone looking to commit a crime does not want attention focused on him. The loud ear piercing scream of these alarms is definitely going to focus attention on him and he will leave the scene as quickly as possible.
4. Tasers, though more expensive, are another option for a woman living alone. They are more effective than a stun gun in that they actually fire 2 prongs into the attacker, sending high voltage electricity through the wires attached to the prongs. These prongs can attach to the assailant through his clothes and will put him out of commission long enough for you to escape and get help.
Before purchasing pepper sprays, stun guns or tasers, be sure to check with your local police as to the laws concerning these products. In most cities and states they are legal, but there are restrictions in some areas and you don't want to acquire one of these non-lethal weapons and then find out you cannot legally use it.
So, there are really many ways for a woman living alone to protect herself, both having to do with her home and her person. Don't let fear for your safety keep you from enjoying the freedom of living alone. Take action and control of your life and your safety.
